JOE'S HOUSE AT THE ESTC

Thursday, March 4, 2010  Collingdale Fire Company #1 went to “Joe’s House” at Delaware County Emergency Services Training Center in Darby Township tonight as a continuation from last week’s topic of search and rescue techniques. Joe’s house is a two-story mock-up of a residential property with different kinds of obstacles inside that firefighters could encounter in a real life situation. Inside of Joe’s house, all lights are turned off and the whole two-story structure is filled with simulated smoke from a smoke machine to make the training as real as possible. Member’s in attendance broke down in two-man teams and performed either a right-handed search or left-handed search to conduct primary and/or secondary searches of the house to locate and rescue any trapped victims there may be. All members in attendance did an excellent job and came out of our two-week training session of search and rescue more knowledgeable and prepared for the proper techniques and tools to be used during search and rescue in a real life scenario. Next week, training will be brought to a halt for the Company will break and have a Memorial Service in Floral Hall that was postponed in February due to a snowstorm to honor our five (5) departed members from 2009.

SEARCH & RESCUE TRAINING

Thursday, February 25, 2010  Due to the expected snowstorm, the Memorial Service that was scheduled for this evening was postponed until Thursday, March 11th, 2010. Instead, members stayed inside due to the frigid temperatures and wintry weather conditions and continued training on the basics. Crew night started off with a lecture from Lieutenants Dave Seifert and Mike Boyle on the proper techniques of search and rescue including right-handed searches vs. left-handed searches as well as the tools and equipment that would be needed or used during search and rescue. After the lecture ended, the game room of the fire house was used as an area where the members could practice what they just learned. Members broke down into two-man teams and performed either a left-handed or right-handed search while searching for and rescuing several mock victims using different scenarios. Next week members will take what they learned and put it to test when they go to Joes House at the Delaware County Emergency Services Training Center in Darby Township.

DAISY'S GIRL SCOUTS VISIT STATION 06

Monday, February 22, 2010  This evening the Daisy's Girl Scout Troop from Aldan came to the firehouse for a tour and fire prevention demonstration. Girl Scout Daisies meet in groups of five to ten with two or more adult leaders in a nurturing, inclusive environment. They go on trips, learn about nature and science, and explore the arts and their communities. Girl Scout Daisies usually range in grades K-1. The group of ten Daisies were shown all the trucks, ambulances and equipment by members of the Fire Prevention Committee. After getting the tour and excitement of getting to sit inside a fire truck and ambulance, each group was taken into the Fire Prevention Trailer for a demonstration on what to do in case of a fire. Each daisy were taught to stay as low to the ground as possible in a fire, two-ways out, how to call for help and other fire prevention safety tips. The adults/parents who were attendance also received tips about practicing fire drills at home, making sure they have working smoke detectors and other important fire prevention tips. We would like to thank the Daisy's and their leaders for the delicious tray of girl scouts cookies they donated to the company. Attached are a few pictures and video from the tour. Any leader/parent of the troop requesting more pictures, please send an email to webmaster@collingdale1.com and we will forward them on.
