March came roaring into Collingdale on Tuesday, keeping the fire companies busy. Beginning with a call for a dwelling fire at 811 Andrews Ave. with the police on location reporting heavy smoke from the chimney. Crew found a heater backfire and were back in station within 20 minutes.
As the crews were returning from the call on Andrews Ave, we received a call for a fire in the 200 block of Rhodes Ave. Crews from Collingdale #2 saw heavy smoke coming from the club house of the Collingdale Swim Club. Eng42, along with 04-1, and Quint6 arrived on scene and began stretching handlines and throwing ladders to the one story building. Engine06-1 with a crews of 4 layed a 5" line into Quint 6. Crews found heavy fire in the ceiling of building. Crews were pushed back by live electric wires arching inside of the building. PECO was put on a priority responses, to secure the power. Crews were able to hold the fire to the snack bar and members rooms.
PECO arrived and secured the power and crews began overhauling the building. Collingdale Fire Marshal George Kaiser, along with Delaware County CID, and PSP Fire Marshal were on scene to investigate the cause of the fire.
